Studio Explorations

My studio explorations will be focused around the month I spent in the lower level of my house last February after being released from the hospital from breaking my back. I am not exactly sure how I will represent this but I know it will involve x-rays a calendar my back brace and possibly a performance or video.

  1. Based on what you were talking about in class I think your concept is very interesting and is going to make for a great piece of work. I know you said that you were considering a performance piece but you don't usually work like that as an artist, but I think that could be extremely effective. Maybe you could focus on how it changed you, as you were saying in class, and do something more conceptual based off of that.

It may help to ask yourself a few questions, as in how exactly that period of time changed you. And how you see the lower level of your house now that you spent so much time there. There are a lot of interesting concepts with the idea of being confined in a space and how that effects someone which you could also play off of.

I think this exploration could have a lot of different and interesting outcomes. I still think that a video would be useful, but just thought I would throw out some other things for you to think about.

  2. Thanks Taryn thats really helpful. I didn't exactly know what kind of response I would get from a performance. I agree that a video would be useful but I don't have the means of making one (no camera). that isnt a big deal though because there are a million ways to get around that. I was thinking somewhere along the lines of poetry being involved if I do decide to do a performance. I feel as though there are still many frustrations inside of me from this period of my life that I've never gotten to let out.

  3. I think that a video would be a really interesting take on such a unique experience, especially since it's not just about an environment but about a specific period of time in an environment. I would be interested to see what kinds of symbols you would use to represent how you changed over this time, physically, emotionally and psychologically. I feel like the complexity of your situation will really lend itself to video. Were there any sounds or objects that grew to annoy the crap out of you because you heard or saw them day in and day out? Were there things you grew to appreciate more that you had never noticed before?
